How to block ads in Safari with a content blocker
On iPhone, an ad blocker for Safari is a content blocker: an app from the App Store that gives Safari a list of things to block. Safari does the blocking itself. Apple lets you use more than one content blocker.
- Download a content blocking app from the App Store.
- Open Settings, tap Apps, then tap Safari.
- Tap Extensions.
- Turn on the content blocker in the list.
Reader and Hide Distracting Items
Reader: on a page that supports it, tap the page menu button, then Show Reader. Reader shows just the text and images of an article.
Hide Distracting Items, on iOS 18 or later: tap the page menu button, then Hide Distracting Items, and tap the item you want gone. On iOS 26 or later, tap Hide after you choose an item. Apple notes that this does not permanently hide ads or other items that change often.
What a Safari ad blocker can't do
A content blocker works in Safari. It does not block ads inside other apps, such as games, social apps or the YouTube app, because those apps do not load their pages through Safari's blockers.
Some websites ask you to turn a blocker off before they show a page. Use the per-site switch above for those.
Is a content blocker private?
A content blocker hands Safari a list of rules and Safari applies them on your iPhone, so the blocker does not see the pages you open. Other kinds of Safari extension can ask for access to your browsing; Apple's advice is to check what each installed extension does.
Phone Cleaner's Safari protection is a content blocker of this kind. It hides ads, trackers and cookie pop-ups, and the app never learns which pages you visit. It hides cookie banners without answering them for you.
