Clear an app's cache

Many apps that stream or download — music, video, podcasts, social apps, browsers — have a Clear Cache or Storage option in their own settings. Removing offline downloads there frees the most.

Delete and reinstall an app

  1. Open Settings › General › iPhone Storage and tap the app.
  2. Check Documents & Data — that is the app's cache and its saved files together.
  3. Make sure anything you need is backed up or synced to the app's account.
  4. Tap Delete App, then reinstall it from the App Store. It starts with an empty cache; sign in again.

What a cache cleaner app can do

On iPhone, every app keeps its cache in its own sealed space, so a “cache cleaner” cannot reach other apps' files, whatever its name says. What a cleaner can do is free the space you control — usually far more than any cache.

Cache and System Data

Caches iOS keeps for itself are counted as System Data. Restarting your iPhone often makes it smaller; it also shrinks on its own when iOS needs room.

Questions

Is clearing cache safe?

Yes. Caches are copies an app can fetch again. You may be signed out of websites, and apps may load a little slower the first time.

Does clearing cache delete photos?

No. Photos, messages and documents are not cache.

Can a cleaner app clear other apps' cache?

No. iOS doesn't let any app read or delete another app's files.

How often should I clear cache?

Only when space is short or an app misbehaves. Caches make apps faster.
