How to block a sender in Gmail
- Open a message from the sender.
- At the top right, next to Reply, tap More.
- Tap Block followed by the sender's name.
All their future emails go to Spam. Blocking does not unsubscribe you from their list, and it does not remove the emails they already sent.
Block, report spam or unsubscribe?
Block is for one sender you never want to hear from again.
Report spam is for mail you never asked for. It moves the email to Spam, and Gmail gets better at catching similar mail as you report more.
Unsubscribe is for newsletters and shops you signed up to. It asks the sender to take you off the list, which can take a few days.
Report spam or phishing in Gmail
- Open the Gmail app and open the email.
- At the top right, tap More, then Report spam.
- For several at once: in your inbox, tap the sender's profile picture next to each email, then tap More and Report spam.
Gmail also has Report phishing, which Google's help describes on a computer: open the message, click More next to Reply, then Report phishing.
Unsubscribe from a sender
- Open an email from the sender.
- Next to the sender's name, tap Unsubscribe.
- In the pop-up, tap Unsubscribe. Some senders show Go to website instead.
Gmail is also rolling out Manage subscriptions: at the top left, tap Menu, then Manage subscriptions, and tap Unsubscribe next to a sender. Google says it is rolling out gradually and may not be available to you yet.
A spam filter of your own, on a computer
A filter can delete or archive matching mail as it arrives. Filters are created in Gmail on a computer: click Show search options in the search box, enter what to match, click Create filter and choose what should happen.
Clear what is already there
Stopping new mail does not remove the old. The Gmail app selects up to 50 messages at a time, so clearing years of mail by hand is slow. Phone Cleaner lists your senders by how many emails they sent, and can unsubscribe and move a sender's emails to Gmail's Trash in one go. Its unsubscribe works for senders that support one-click unsubscribing, and it may not always work.
