See what is draining your iPhone battery

  1. Open Settings and tap Battery.
  2. Look at the Daily Usage chart: it compares today with the last seven days and says whether you are using more battery than usual.
  3. Under App and System Activity, see which apps and system tasks used the most battery today. Tap one for its usage day by day.
  4. Tap View All Battery Usage, then a day, for the full list.

Under each app, iOS says how the battery was used. Background means the app was working while you weren't looking at it, such as playing music, tracking your location or syncing photos. Cellular coverage means it was used where the signal was weak, which costs more battery. Notifications means the app kept waking the iPhone.

Check iOS's battery suggestions

Settings › Battery shows suggestions when it finds something worth changing, such as High Brightness, or Auto-Brightness or Auto-Lock being off. Each one says what to change. A bright screen is one of the biggest uses of battery.

Battery draining fast after an update

After an iOS update, work related to it carries on in the background for a while and can affect battery life and how warm the iPhone gets. While it runs, Settings › Battery may show the Insight Ongoing iOS Update. Apple's advice is to wait a few days, then check again. The same happens after setting up a new iPhone (Ongoing Device Setup).

iPhone battery draining overnight

Open View All Battery Usage and tap the day: the list shows what used the battery while you slept. Apps working in the background and notifications that wake the iPhone are the usual causes, and a weak signal adds to both. If you know there will be no coverage, Apple suggests Airplane Mode.

Background App Refresh lets apps check for new content while you aren't using them. Limit it in Settings › General › Background App Refresh: turn it off, or let it run on Wi-Fi only. A live location you are sharing, in Find My, Messages or another app, also keeps iPhone working out where you are, and a Live Activity keeps an app updating on the Lock Screen. To stop sharing, turn off Share My Location in Find My › Me; to stop a Live Activity, turn off Live Activities for the app in Settings › Apps.

iPhone getting hot and draining battery

An iPhone can feel warm during setup, a restore from backup or a major update, while charging wirelessly, and when you stream video or play graphics-heavy games. Apple says this is normal and it cools when the task finishes.

Heat is the battery's enemy: using an iPhone in very hot conditions can permanently shorten battery life. Apple's range is 0° to 35° C (32° to 95° F). Don't leave it in a car or in direct sun. If it gets too warm, charging slows or stops and the screen dims until it cools.

Closing apps doesn't save battery

Apple says closing all your apps does not affect your iPhone's performance: an app in the app switcher uses power only when it is active or doing a specific background task. Swiping apps away does not stop the drain.

When the battery itself is the cause

If the drain is steady from day to day and no app stands out, check Settings › Battery › Battery Health (Battery Health & Charging on iPhone 14 or earlier). An aged battery holds less charge, so a full charge simply lasts less time. Service next to Battery Health means Apple recommends a new battery.

Questions

Why is my iPhone battery draining so fast all of a sudden?

Often because an iOS update is finishing in the background: Settings › Battery shows Ongoing iOS Update, and Apple says to wait a few days. Otherwise, App and System Activity in Settings › Battery shows which app changed.

What is draining my iPhone battery?

Open Settings › Battery. App and System Activity lists the apps and system tasks that used the most battery today, and View All Battery Usage shows each day of the past week.

Why does my iPhone battery die overnight?

Usually apps working in the background, notifications waking the iPhone, or a weak signal. The day's list in View All Battery Usage shows which apps were active.

Does closing apps save battery on iPhone?

No. Apple says apps in the app switcher use power only when they are active or doing a background task, so closing them all does not help.

Is there an app that stops battery drain on iPhone?

No. iOS does not let one app control how other apps use the battery. The controls are iOS's own, in Settings › Battery and Settings › General › Background App Refresh.
