Short answer
To save battery on iPhone, turn on Low Power Mode: Settings › Battery › Power Mode › Low Power Mode on iPhone 15 or later, Settings › Battery on iPhone 14 or earlier, or from Control Center. Then keep Auto-Brightness on, limit Background App Refresh in Settings › General, and check which apps use Location Services.
Turn on Low Power Mode
Open Settings and tap Battery.
On iPhone 15 or later, tap Power Mode, then turn on Low Power Mode. On iPhone 14 or earlier, turn on Low Power Mode on the Battery screen.
Or add the Low Power Mode control to Control Center and tap it there.

Step 1 of 4Open Settings and tap Battery.
Step 2 of 4Tap Power Mode. On iPhone 14 or earlier, Low Power Mode is on the Battery screen itself.
Step 3 of 4Turn on Low Power Mode.
Step 4 of 4Low Power Mode is on. It turns off by itself once iPhone charges to 80%.
Low Power Mode sets Auto-Lock to 30 seconds, lowers the screen brightness, turns off some visual effects, pauses iCloud Photos, stops automatic downloads, mail fetch and Background App Refresh, and limits ProMotion displays to 60 frames per second. Calls, messages and the internet work as usual, though some tasks may run more slowly.
While it is on, the battery icon is yellow. It turns off by itself when iPhone charges to 80% or higher.
Adaptive Power (iPhone 15 Pro and later)
On iPhone 15 Pro and later with iOS 26, Adaptive Power steps in on days when you use more battery than usual: it can lower the brightness, limit background activity and turn on Low Power Mode at 20%. Turn it on or off in Settings › Battery › Power Mode. It is on by default on the iPhone 17 models and iPhone Air.

Limit Background App Refresh
Background App Refresh lets apps you are not using check for new content. In Settings › General › Background App Refresh, turn it off, or choose Wi-Fi so it never uses cellular data. Apps still update when you open them.

Cut other background activity
Live Activities keep an app's updates, such as Maps directions, a delivery or a game score, on the Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island. For an app you don't need them from, go to Settings › Apps, tap the app, then tap Live Activities and turn them off. Not every app has the setting.

Mail can check for new email in the background. In Settings › Apps › Mail › Mail Accounts › Fetch New Data, accounts that support Push get new mail as it arrives; for the others, choose a schedule under Fetch. Automatically downloads new mail in the background only while iPhone is charging and on Wi-Fi. If Mail shows Background usage in Settings › Battery, Apple suggests fetching manually or less often.
Notifications wake the iPhone, and Settings › Battery shows Notifications under an app that keeps doing it. For apps you don't need to hear from, go to Settings › Notifications, tap the app and turn off Allow Notifications.
Keep the screen dimmer
A bright screen uses a lot of energy. Keep Auto-Brightness on in Settings › Accessibility › Display & Text Size; Apple says turning it off may increase power use. Lower the brightness from Control Center, or in Settings › Display & Brightness.

Check which apps use your location
Apps that track your location in the background use battery while you aren't looking at them; in Settings › Battery their usage shows as Background. Review each app in Settings › Privacy & Security › Location Services, and give less access to the ones that don't need it.

Stop sharing your live location
A live location updates in real time as you move, so while you share it, iPhone keeps working out where you are. When you no longer need to be found, stop sharing. In Find My, tap Me and turn off Share My Location to hide your location from everyone, or tap People, tap a person, then Stop Sharing My Location.

A location shared in a Messages conversation, whether for an hour, until the end of the day or indefinitely, stops when you tap the contact at the top of the conversation, then Stop Sharing My Location. Live location shared from other apps, such as WhatsApp or Google Maps, is stopped in that app.
Use Wi-Fi, and mind a weak signal
Wi-Fi uses less battery than a cellular connection, and both use less where the signal is strong. On iPhone 12 and later, 5G Auto (Settings › Cellular › Cellular Data Options › Voice & Data) switches to LTE when 5G would not be noticeably faster. If you will be out of coverage for a while, turn on Airplane Mode.

To keep an eye on the charge, open Settings › Battery and turn on Battery Percentage. On an iPhone with Face ID it appears inside the battery icon; you can also swipe down from the top-right corner to see it in Control Center, or add the Batteries widget to the Home Screen.

Questions
Does Low Power Mode really save battery?
Yes. It cuts background work and visual extras: Auto-Lock at 30 seconds, lower brightness, no automatic downloads, mail fetch or Background App Refresh, and iCloud Photos paused.
Can I leave Low Power Mode on all the time?
You can turn it on whenever you like, but it turns off by itself when iPhone charges to 80% or higher, and some tasks may run more slowly while it is on.
Why is my iPhone battery icon yellow?
Low Power Mode is on. It turns off by itself once iPhone charges to 80%, or you can turn it off in Settings › Battery (in Power Mode on iPhone 15 or later).
Does turning off Background App Refresh save battery?
It stops apps you aren't using from checking for new content, which Low Power Mode also does to save battery. Apps update when you open them.
Do battery saver apps work on iPhone?
No. iOS does not let an app change other apps' battery use or iOS's own settings. The settings on this page are the ones that save battery.
