What's inside System Data

Settings › General › iPhone Storage shows System Data as one grey block. It holds things like caches from streaming and browsing, logs, temporary files, and resources iOS downloads in the background.

Step 1 of 3Open Settings and tap General.

Why it grows

Streaming music and video, downloads in progress and recent updates all add to it. iOS clears these when it needs room, so the size goes up and down.

How to make it smaller

  1. Restart your iPhone.
  2. Open Settings › Apps › Safari and tap Clear History and Website Data if you browse a lot.
  3. In apps that stream or download, clear their cache or offline downloads.
  4. Keep a few gigabytes free so iOS can manage its own files.

Questions

Why is my System Data so big?

Streaming, downloads in progress and recent updates fill it. It can grow by several gigabytes and drop again once iOS clears it.

Can I delete System Data?

Not directly. iOS manages it and clears it when it needs space.

Does restoring my iPhone reset System Data?

It often makes it smaller, but it is a lot of work for a temporary gain — try a restart first.
