Can you delete photos from iPhone but not iCloud?
iCloud Photos is a sync, not a second copy. There is one library, shown on all your devices, so a photo deleted on one is deleted everywhere you use iCloud Photos. It stays in Recently Deleted for 30 days, then it is gone for good. No setting deletes from the iPhone only while the sync is on.
1. Optimize iPhone Storage
This is what Apple built for the job. Full-resolution photos and videos stay in iCloud and the iPhone keeps space-saving versions, starting with the ones you open least. It is on by default with iCloud Photos.
- Open Settings and tap your name, then iCloud.
- Tap Photos.
- On iOS 27 or later, tap iPhone Storage. Then make sure Optimize iPhone Storage is selected.
2. Turn off iCloud Photos on this iPhone, then remove them
This stops the sync on this device only. Your library stays in iCloud, and photos you add, edit or delete on the iPhone afterwards no longer change it. It also means new photos from this iPhone are no longer uploaded.
- Open Settings › your name › iCloud › Photos.
- Turn off Sync this iPhone.
- Choose Remove from iPhone to clear the photos from the device without keeping a copy, or Download Photos & Videos to keep one.
3. Copy them elsewhere, then delete
Move the photos you want out of the library to a computer, an external drive or another storage service. Once you have checked the copy, delete them on the iPhone. They leave iCloud too, which frees iCloud storage as well.
4. Delete only what you won't miss
Often the space is in things you would not miss: duplicates, near-identical shots, screenshots and long videos. Clearing those shrinks the library on the iPhone and in iCloud at once.
